Even if the first traces of the discovery of prime numbers date back more than 20,000 years (Perhaps even before the invention of the alphabet!), the first certified writings on prime numbers date from around 3 centuries before Jesus -Christ.
We know that there are infinitely many prime numbers. But they have not yet revealed all their secrets.
What are prime numbers?
Prime numbers are natural numbers greater than 1 that are not a product of two smaller natural numbers.A natural number greater than 1 that is not prime is called a composite number.
For example, 5 is a prime number because the only ways of writing it as a product, 1 × 5 or 5 × 1, involve 5 itself. However, 4 is a composite number because it is a product (2 × 2) in which both numbers are smaller than 4.
Primes are fundamental in number theory because of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic: every natural number greater than 1 is either a prime itself or can be expressed uniquely as the product of a finite number of primes (up to the order of the factors).
How to find prime numbers
There are a few ways to detect a prime number:
1. Brute-force method
The brute-force method is to check if the number is divisible by any number less than or equal to its square root. If it is divisible by any of these numbers, then it is not a prime number. If it is not divisible by any of these numbers, then it is a prime number.
However, the brute-force method can be inefficient for large numbers. For example, to check if the number 100,000,007 is a prime number, we would need to check if it is divisible by every number less than or equal to its square root, which is 3,162. This could be very time-consuming.
2. Prime factorization
Another way to detect a prime number is to prime factorize it. If a number has more than two factors, then it is not a prime number. If a number has only two factors (1 and itself), then it is a prime number.
However, prime factorization can also be inefficient for large numbers. For example, to prime factorize the number 100,000,007, we would need to find all of its prime factors. This could be very difficult.
3. Primality tests
There are also a number of primality tests that can be used to check if a number is prime. These tests are more efficient than the brute-force method or prime factorization method for large numbers.
One common primality test is the Fermat’s little theorem test. This test works by checking if a certain equation holds true for the given number. If the equation does not hold true, then the number is not prime. If the equation does hold true, then the number is probably prime, but there is a small chance that it is a pseudoprime.
Another common primality test is the Miller-Rabin test. This test is more complex than the Fermat’s little theorem test, but it is also more reliable. The Miller-Rabin test has a very small probability of returning a false positive, which means that it is very unlikely to mistake a composite number for a prime number.
Which method you choose to use to detect a prime number will depend on your specific needs. If you are only checking a small number of numbers, then the brute-force method or prime factorization method may be sufficient. If you are checking a large number of numbers, then you may want to use a primality test, such as the Fermat’s little theorem test or the Miller-Rabin test.
In addition to the above methods, there are a number of other primality tests that have been developed.
- Use a computer. There are many computer programs that can be used to detect prime numbers. These programs can check large numbers very quickly.
- Use a lookup table. A lookup table is a list of all known prime numbers up to a certain number. If the number you are checking is not in the lookup table, then it is not a prime number.
- Use a probabilistic primality test. Probabilistic primality tests are very efficient and have a very low probability of returning a false positive. However, there is a small chance that a probabilistic primality test will return a false negative, which means that it will mistake a composite number for a prime number.
Some of these tests are more efficient than others and some are more reliable than others. The best method to use will depend on the specific application.
